Brad Pitt blames himself for split from Angelina Jolie as he admits to drinking too much
The Hollywood star appears to blame himself for the events that led to his divorce from Angelina Jolie in his first public interview since the split.

Brad Pitt, 53, appears in this month’s GQ Style magazine talking about everything from his childhood being brought up by revivalist Christian parents to his new-found interest in therapy – and even admits using drugs and alcohol as a crutch, according to Standard Digital.

The father of six revealed that he’s been receiving mental health help since his estranged wife filed for divorce in August 2016, but said the path leading to her decision was “self-inflicted”.

“I famously step in s*** – at least for me it seems pretty epic,” he told the men’s magazine.

“I often wind up with a smelly foot in my mouth. I often say the wrong thing, often in the wrong place and time … I’m trying to get better. I’m really trying to get better.”

He went on: “You know, I just started therapy. I love it, I love it. I went through two therapists to get to the right one.”

The interview also touched on Brad’s loneliness – he and Angelina had a fraught battle over custody of their children when she first filed – and Pitt confessed what he does to feel better.

“I get up every morning and I make a fire. When I go to bed, I make a fire, just because – it makes me feel life. I just feel life in this house,” he said.

While Brad denied his recent behaviour is the result of a mid-life crisis, he did admit to relying on alcohol and drugs in his earlier years.

“I can’t remember a day since I got out of college when I wasn’t boozing or had a spliff, or something,” he said. “I stopped everything except boozing when I started my family. But even this last year, you know – things I wasn’t dealing with. I was boozing too much. It’s just become a problem.”

He’s since replaced the alcohol with cranberry juice and fizzy water, joking that he now has the “cleanest urinary tract” in LA, but said he’d been a “professional” boozer.

Brad only mentioned Angelina directly once in the whole interview, but spoke about how his role as a father has changed now that their children aren’t with him all the time.

“Kids are so delicate. They absorb everything. They need to have their hand held and things explained. They need to be listened to,” he said.

“When I get in that busy work mode, I’m not hearing. I want to be better at that. I gotta be more. I gotta be more for them. I have to show them. And I haven’t been great at it.”

Luckily, he and Angelina have come to an agreement over visitation, but Brad said his divorce felt like a death.

“‘If you love someone, set them free.’ Now I know what it means, by feeling it,” he said.

“It means to love without ownership. It means expecting nothing in return. It doesn’t mean f***-all to me until, you know. Until you live it.”

The raw interview accompanied a cover shoot in which the actor looked especially gaunt.

In one of the three versions of the GQ Style cover, Brad wears a pale jacket worn open over his naked chest, with his beard and moustache tinged with grey hair.

He stares directly into the camera, which gives the appearance of sunken cheeks and a haunted look in his eyes.

In another, Brad is given a beachy makeover as he poses with a thin layer of sand on his weather-worn face.

In the third front cover, the A-lister wears a brown jacket decorated with an orange floral pattern as he sits among some tall grass.

It’s his first public interview since news that Angelina had filed for divorce broke, as Brad has been laying low ever since then.

He was spotted out in Los Angeles towards the end of March with his newly slimmed-down frame evident as he arrived at a studio.

Back in January, a source told Us Weekly that Brad had been working hard to look after himself after the split.

“He lost a bunch of weight. He’s focusing on himself again, watching what he eats and has a chef making him healthy meals,” the insider claimed.

“He’s exercising. He’s been outdoors a lot, hiking and walking. He’s had a lot of time to focus on himself.”

Added a second insider: “He does a lot of weight training. He’s dedicated to clean living and eating right.”
