Jack the Ripper is one of the most famous bloodthirsty criminals of all time. Investigators were looking for a man who has made at least five brutal murders in London"s Whitechapel since 1888.
Using modern technology and new methods, DNA examination revealed that Jack the Ripper was Aaron Kosminsky, an immigrant from Poland. It is he who is responsible for the murder of Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, Mary Jane Kelly, says the book "The naming of Jack the Ripper", written by Russell Edwards. In 2007, he bought a bloody handkerchief of Catherine Eddowes at the auction in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, which had only the DNA of two people – the killer and the victim. The former owner of the handkerchief, David Melville Hayes, gave it to the Museum of Crime in Scotland Yard in 1991, but the handkerchief has never been used as evidence, due to the "lack of evidence of origin of the handkerchief".
In 2005, judicial examination found the results of the fabric test inconclusive. But, after the DNA examination, as Edwards himself says: "I have received only a piece of evidence. I spent 14 years studying this issue, and we have finally solved the mystery of who Jack the Ripper was. Only unbelievers who want to perpetuate the myth may stumble at this".
Edwards should be grateful to his friend, the Finnish biochemist Jari Louhelainen, because using a special technology he was able to detect traces of blood and extract their DNA. Russell Edwards said, "I asked Jari for help, and we spent three and a half years on the research. When we discovered the truth it was the most amazing feeling in my life".
Aaron Kosminsky was a Polish Jew immigrant. During the anti-Semitic riots in Russia, he came with his family to England in 1881 and settled in the area of Mile End Old Town. According to Edwards, it is believed that Kosminsky was mentally ill; most likely, he was paranoid schizophrenic. He describes him as a misogynist.
"Now when it"s over, I"m excited and proud of what we have achieved and are pleased that our theory that Kosminsky is Jack the Ripper, is confirmed," says Louhelainen.
