Scientists discover a way to fight superbugs without antibiotics

Scientists have managed to create medications that are not antibiotics, but can defeat dangerous diseases caused by bacteria such as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, reports joinfo.ua.

So far, the innovative product exists only in the form of ointments, and can be applied in certain areas of the skin. Scientists plan to create pills and injections. It is reported by The Times.

90 years ago, since the invention of penicillin, antibiotics have been the most important medicine in the world. But recently the WHO reported the oncoming of "post-antibiotic era" when people will die from common infections or small wounds.

Scientists explained that the new medicine would fight infections in another way, not like the antibiotics do. Their main weapons are endolysin viruses that attack bacteria, but do not affect the "good" ones.

The head of the study and the president of the company said that since the creation of such medicine there would start "a new era in the fight against bacteria resistant to antibiotics".
