The News-Herald source from Morganton reported that last week the schoolteachers went to Washington, DC, to make a law that would allow them to enlist in the Air Force.
The Congress approved two bills that would require the Air Force to implement a program to assess the feasibility of providing the hearing-impaired with the right to become soldiers. The teacher of civics David Byrd said that deaf people should have the right to perform non-combat tasks. Byrd said that in this case, deaf people could be treated equally with those who can hear.
