The term "Negro" was widely used in the United States during the period of slavery.

The new rules of the U.S. Army allow using the word "Negro" for the African Americans serving in the U.S. military. It is reported by CNN.

According to the October 22 "Army Command Policy," known as regulation AR 600-20, under the category "Black or African American" that would include "A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa, the terms such as "Haitian" or "Negro" can be used in addition to "Black" or "African American".

According to Lt. Col. S. Justin Platt, the word was added to the statute, as a black or African-American person could "self report" and choose to identify themselves as a Negro. However, a military officer called that "the dumbest thing I have ever heard," noting the Pentagon does not use the word in any of its extensive collection of demographic data.

The term "Negro" was widely used in the United States during the period of slavery. Slavery was abolished in the country after the adoption of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in December 1865. In XX century, with increasing of political correctness, such an addressing in respect to black people began to be perceived as offensive. Now this word in various forms continues to be used as a humorous greeting inside Negro environment.
