For the first time in history, a woman - Michelle Flournoy can head the Pentagon. Also in the Ministry of Defence in Washington there are considered such potential candidates as Democratic senator from Rhode Island Jack Reed and former Deputy of the Ministry of Defence in 2011-2013 Ashton Carter.

In 2009-2012 Michele Flournoy has made a spectacular career in the Pentagon, which was beyond the power of many combatant commanders, becoming, in fact, the third-ranking official in the U.S. Department of Defense, joinfo.ua informs. She is held in respect in foreign political and defense circles of the United States.

Robert Gates, the former Defense Secretary treats Flournoy with great respect, "she was the face of the Pentagon on all policy matters, including Iraq, Afghanistan, and even the operation on destroying Ben Laden," he recalls. The former Minister of Defense Leon Panetta considers Flournoy as one of the most important advisers during his stay on as a Minister of Defense.

Earlier, it was reported that the Pentagon was planning to increase military contingent in Europe.
