African Union gives Burkina Faso 2 weeks to restore civil authority

The African Union (AU) has given the military leadership of Burkina Faso two weeks to return power to the civilian government. It was reported by Reuters.

Otherwise, the Peace and Security Council of the AU intends to impose sanctions against the West African States.

"The African Union is convinced that the change (the overthrow of the civilian government – Ed.) has been democracy. However, popular pressure led to the resignation of the president. So we have taken note of the origin of the popular revolt which led to the military getting power, so we determined the period of two weeks and after that period we are going apply sanctions," Simeon Oyono Esono told journalists via a translator in Addis Ababa.

It is to be recalled that the army took over the leadership of the country on October 31 after the resignation of President Blaise Compaore, who had ruled the country for 27 years. His resignation was preceded by two days of mass protests. First, General Honore Traore declared himself as the president, but in the evening on November 1, the commander of the presidential guard of Burkina Faso Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zidane took over the country.
