The European People"s Party and the Party of European Conservatives and Reformers can not support the ratification of the Association Agreement between the EU and Georgia because of persecution of opponents by the authorities of the country.
It was stated by the representatives of the faction during the meeting of the European Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee.
MEPs say they will support the ratification of the agreement, if Georgia refuses selective justice.
EU countries should influence the government of Georgia to stop persecution of political opponents, said Polish Conservative MEP Anna Fotyga.
"I support the ratification of the Association Agreement between Georgia and the EU, but the members of the EU should influence the government of Georgia to avoid the use of double standards, not only in the judicial system, but also from the point of view of political persecution of the opposition," she said.
The Vice Prime Minister of Georgia Kakha Kaladze said that one cannot ignore the crimes committed by the previous government.
July 18, the Georgian Parliament ratified the Association Agreement with the European Union.
